Onekotan is in Russia’s Kuril Islands between Japan and the tip of the Kamchatka Peninsula. The islands were formed by volcanic activity 2 ~! i: A" g6 s* a! k' I5 N2 m. w/ e
caused by the subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate. Subduction can also generate some of the largest earthquakes & s$ m8 t" o/ H0 H
