The original song was written in 1933 by two Hungarians, Rezso Seress (music)
and Laszlo Javor (lyrics), and consisted of the first two stanza 公仔箱論壇1 M0 x# J# M3 |! L" C
only -- the last stanza was added later, also first in Hungarian, 公仔箱論壇$ W+ y1 ~7 |: B1 z/ V1 @
as Zoe Orosz from Hungary pointed out to me.

Actually, the second part of the song in Hungarian is not so reassuring at all. . `5 @: R: M/ j. c
It is if at all possible, much gloomier than the first two stanzas, almost apocalyptic.
It looks like the pessimism of the song was too much for the translators and they made their translation a happier one. " t: E9 I5 n, o# d( w3 a' _- C
In that case one might argue that the translator has done a bad job
and 'ruined' the song, or in other words: a translator has to maintain the original spirit 公仔箱論壇5 U- G5 a; s6 k! {1 A+ l; X  m
and intentions of the song. On the other hand,
a translator may also be more than just a translator and based on the original create a new song.
Perhaps the Sam Lewis mentioned in the credits is responsible for this.

Zoe Orosz also made a translation into English of the original Hungarian song, adding: 公仔箱論壇$ E/ m3 |# [1 w8 _5 F

I don't think it was ruined at all. We are a very pessimistic people,
so maybe it was good after all that it was not made popular in its original form.

I like this song very much! It is a little jazzy, and Sarah's singing and the music create the right mood for the song.
One thing is very strange, though. The mood changes between the second and the third stanza, ! \. N9 x) s! p: G

I would have expected the change in mood between stanzas two and three to be build up a little more gradually,
in five to ten seconds or so. After all, waking up and realising that it was a dream takes time.
Hazan suggested that the last stanza could still be part of the dream: the singer has lost her lover,
