簡介﹕ Bill Shankly's £35,000 swoop for Keegan from Scunthorpe in May 1971 proved one of the shrewdest transfer moves ever. He was signed as a midfielder and potential replacement for long-serving Ian Callaghan. But Keegan's sparkling display up front in a pre-season practice match persuaded Shankly to plunge him into his debut alongside John Toshack in attack at the start of the 1971-72 season.

Keegan scored after just 12 minutes, Liverpool beat Nottingham Forest 3-1 and another epoch in Anfield history had begun. The confident recruit, born in Armthorpe near Doncaster, hit big-time football like a whirlwind. He swiftly won England under 23 recognition with the first of 63 full caps coming within 18 months as he soared to pop star status.  His potent, trophy-capturing alliance with Toshack became feared throughout England and Europe before Keegan joined Hamburg for £500,000 in 1977, going on to become European Player of the Year twice.

He scored 100 Liverpool goals and said farewell by helping to win their first European Cup with a 3-1 conquest of Borussia Moenchengladbach in Rome. Later he played for Southampton and Newcastle - whom he also managed - received an OBE and in 1999 became England manager.

簡介﹕
It's a sign of how desperate Liverpudlians had become that Paul Ince was not only welcomed with open arms by the fans, but they had practically been clamouring for Roy Evans to sign him as the answer to all of our problems. Liverpool at the time were a good side capable of playing pretty football, but were regarded as having a 'soft centre.' The midfield duo of John Barnes and Jamie Redknapp were excellent at keeping hold of the ball, but not so good at going out and winning it. The concensus was that the reds needed a ball winner, someone who could drive the team forward from the middle of the park and lead by example. Former Manchester United man Ince was seen as the best available at that time, and when it emerged that he was looking to return to England after a successful stint in Italy, Roy Evans made his move. A fee of ?.5mil was agreed with the Italians and Ince became a Liverpool player in the summer of 1997. The prospect of an Ince/Redknapp midfield engine room was a mouth watering one, and the early signs looked good. Despite some inconsistent performances from the team, Ince started brightly, scoring on his home debut against Leicester, a game which the reds lost 2-1. Ince had replaced the ageing Barnes in the side, and had immediately been installed as captain, also at the expense of Barnes, who chose to move on to Newcastle United rather than play reserve team football for the club at which he had established himself as a legend. Ince had his moments, and when he was good he was very good, but much of the time he was anonymous, particularly in games against lesser opposition. Too often he would go missing in games at the likes of Coventry, Leicester and Everton. It was also claimed that he was having far too much influence off the field, most notably in managerial matters, ironically an accusation that was also levelled at his predecessor Barnes. This undoubtedly came about because of the perceived image of Roy Evans as being weak, and not in control of his players. Whether or not there were any substance to the claims about Ince's unhealthy influence is unclear, but it is interesting that almost from the first day that Gerard Houllier took sole charge, he encountered problems with Ince. In fact, Houllier purchased Jean-Michel Ferri purely in case he encountered a serious enough problem with Ince that would have forced him to take drastic action. Ferri was never going to be a part of Houllier's long term plan, but the manager needed to have someone available should the problems with Ince escalate to the point where he could no longer pick him. Ince's performances under Houllier were very much hit and miss. His lack of discipline infuriated Houllier, no more so than when he was needlessly sent off in Valencia, which meant he missed the next round through suspension. As a result, the reds had to take on Celta Vigo with an inexperienced midfield containing Murphy, Thompson and Gerrard. Houllier wanted a defensive midfield player that would sit in front of the back four and offer them protection. Ince wanted to bomb forward at every opportunity and be the hero. He would get his wish towards the end of the 1998/99 season, when injuries to all of the clubs strikers meant that the man who liked to refer to himself as 'the Guv'nor' was pushed into emergency centre forward duty. He did quite well in his new role, scoring against Spurs and then hitting a famous equaliser as the reds came from two down to draw with Man United at Anfield. However, as a midfield player he was simply not carrying out the instructions his manager was giving him. There were numerous reports of bust ups behind the scenes, mainly involving Ince and Phil Thompson. Reports of infighting at the club regularly adorned the back pages of national tabloids, and it is no secret that Ince was responsible for the majority of them. It was obvious that the reds had a 'mole' in the camp, and that mole was Ince. The reds were hardly off the back pages, and often they were on the front pages too. Never before had the club seen so much dirty laundry washed in public, and it was no surprise when that summer Gerard told Ince that he was no l,onger wanted. He eventually joined the 'Dad's Army' up at Middlesborough, and it surprised no-one when he launched a scathing attack on Houllier and Thompson just days after his departure (co-incidentally these comments appeared in the same Sunday tabloid that had ran all of the 'Anfield Mole' stories!). Amongst other things, Ince claimed that Liverpool needed to get rid of Houllier and Tommo or they would take the club down. Within two years the duo had lead the reds to an unprecedented cup trreble, whereas Ince's Middlesboro needed a win on the penultimate game of the season to save themselves from relegation. Enough said really.

簡介﹕
Standing supreme as Liverpool's all-time scoring king the lean Welshman was one of the deadliest strikers in football history, blending superb anticipation with lethal finishing. His attack partnership with Kenny Dalglish is widely rated the best ever in British football.

Rush became Britain's most expensive teenager when Bob Paisley paid £300,000 to sign him from Chester in 1980. During his two-part Anfield career, split by a season with Juventus in 1987-88 when he left and returned for a combined £6 million, Rush scored 346 goals in 660 senior outings, although in the League only he was 16 goals short of Roger Hunt's club record 245.

It was about the only one to elude him. Rush's haul of 44 FA Cup goals (39 of them for Liverpool) is a 20th century record while his five-goal total in FA Cup Finals (two in 1986 and 1989 and one in 1992 all on winning Liverpool sides) is an all-time best by an individual. Rush shares with Geoff Hurst the League Cup scoring record of 49 and was the first player to win that competition five times, completing his nap hand as Liverpool captain against Bolton in 1995. He scored 10 times in 18 Wembley outings for the club.

He also collected five Championship medals, one European Cup and was awarded the MBE. Rush scored an all-time Mersey derby record of 25 goals against Everton, won Europe's Golden Boot with 32 League goals in 1984 when he was also double Footballer of the Year and captained Wales, for whom he scored a record 28 goals in 73 games. He joined Leeds in 1996 and later played for Newcastle, Wrexham and Sydney Olympic.

簡介﹕
The short and stormy period Graeme Souness had as Liverpool manager several years after being a player at Anfield should never cloud the fact that he was one of the most inspirational captains in the club's history, a tough-tackling, ball-winning midfielder who took no nonsense from any opponent and whose mere presence intimidated the opposing team at the same time as lifting his own.

Graeme was born in Edinburgh but his first professional club was in England. Although a member of the team which won the F.A. Youth cup for Tottenham, he never played a competitive first-team fixture for Spurs and eventually moved to Middlesbrough in January 1973. It was on Tees-side that he made his name, helping 'Boro win the Second Division by an astonishing 15 points from second-placed Luton Town in 1974 and it was not surprising that bigger clubs soon started to make enquiries about the elegant midfield player with the ferocious shot who had such passion for the game.

Liverpool made their move in January 1978 when Graeme was 24 years old and still clearly had his best years ahead of him. A European Cup winners' medal only months after he arrived on Merseyside was just a taste of what was to come for him and his new club. Over the next six seasons, Souness only missed 20 First Division fixtures and won FIVE League championship medals. Apart from their domination of the domestic game, Liverpool were the team most-feared in Europe as well and after Nottingham Forest had taken their European crown away from them and gone on to win and retain the giant trophy, it was finally reclaimed in 1981. That was also the first year that Liverpool won the Football League cup, a competition they had taken none too seriously in its early days but which had guaranteed a Wembley final and a European place for its winners for some time.

Liverpool only played in the Champions' cup during Graeme's time as a player but still won the League cup on a record four successive occasions. Along with Phil Neal, Alan Kennedy, Kenny Dalglish, Sammy Lee & Ian Rush, Souness played in all four finals (although he was absent for the 1981 replay with West Ham) and scored with a long-range left-foot drive in the Maine Road replay with Everton in 1984, the only goal of two tense and fiercely-contested matches. That was Graeme's final season as a Liverpool player. Rumours had been rife for a while that he would be making a big-money move abroad but the player himself stayed focused on what would turn out to be the most successful season in Liverpool's history.

The club reached their 4th European cup final by winning every away leg and in the second-leg of the semi-final with Dinamo Bucharest, Souness was attacked verbally and physically by Rumanian players, incensed that he had broken the jaw of one of their colleagues in the first meeting at Anfield two weeks previously. He responded, as he usually did when the odds were stacked against him, with a performance of great concentration and discipline, qualities that he would need in abundance when it was discovered that the club's opponents (Roma) for what would turn out to be his farewell Liverpool appearance would have the unfair advantage of playing the final in their own stadium !

Graeme Souness's performance on that memorable night in the Italian capital undoubtedly helped secure his move to Sampdoria shortly afterwards. By now a regular in the Scottish international team, he helped Sampdoria win the Italian cup and even scored in the final. After two successful years in Italy, he returned to his homeland to become player-manager at Glasgow Rangers and immediately set about the task of ensuring that they would become the club to beat in Scotland.

After nearly five years at Ibrox and numerous domestic trophies, Souness arrived at Anfield in the Spring of 1991 in the wake of Kenny Dalglish's decision to step down and after Ronnie Moran had filled the position as caretaker-manager while the club's Board thought carefully about who his successor might be. Graeme bought and sold with the same almost reckless approach he had shown in Scotland but what might have worked north of the border did not have the same effect in England.

His triple heart by-pass operation days after the club's F.A. cup semi-final with Portsmouth in 1992 and the eventual successful in the final against Sunderland gave him more time to achieve what he wanted as Liverpool manager. The F.A. cup 3rd round defeat to Second Division Bolton Wanderers in 1993 coupled with an alarming slump in League form might have ended his reign earlier that it did. But even Graeme's close friendship with Liverpool chairman David Moores could not survive another humiliating home F.A. cup defeat - this time against Bristol City - and his reign as Liverpool manager ended shortly afterwards.

The turbulent three years he was in charge at Anfield turned many supporters against him. But they will still recall what he brought to the club as a player, many remarkable years of success with numerous trophies and unforgettable performances. Graeme Souness played over 350 times for Liverpool and scored over 50 goals. He deserves to be remembered as one of the greatest players ever to wear the famous red shirt.

簡介﹕
Steve McManaman became the first high profile Liverpool player to leave the club on a Bosman-style free transfer when he joined Spanish giants Real Madrid during the summer of 1999.

A winger, blessed with exceptional dribbling skills, McManaman was raised just a stones throw away from Anfield, in nearby Kirkdale. A boyhood Evertonian he joined the Reds straight from school and as an apprentice cleaned John Barnes' boots.

He rose through the Anfield ranks and in December 1990 his progress was rewarded when he made his senior bow, appearing as a second half substitute for Peter Beardsley in a 2-0 home win against Sheffield United. The opening game of the following season saw him make his full debut against Oldham Athletic and four days later he scored the first of his - goals for the Reds in a 2-1 defeat at Maine Road.

He celebrated the end of his first full season in the first team by starring in the FA Cup final triumph over Sunderland and three years later he shone at Wembley again, scoring two goals and picking up the man-of-the-match award in the Coca Cola Cup Final success against Bolton Wanderers.

On the international front, McManaman won his first England cap against Nigeria in November 1994, coming on as a 25th minute substitute for the injured Robert Lee. His full debut came against Colombia in September 1995.

A scorer of spectacular goals, as fans of Celtic and Arsenal will testify, his emergence as one of the games most exciting talents brought him to the attention of Europe's leading clubs and he almost signed for Barcelona in September 1997.

At the start of the following season he was named club captain but it was to be his last at Anfield. In July 1999 he opted to sign for Real Madrid and he capped his first season at the Bernabeu with a stunning strike in the European Cup Final against Valencia.

簡介﹕
One of the finest goalkeepers in the history of British football, with only Elisha Scott challenging him as Liverpool's best ever, Clemence was voted by BBC listeners in Merseyside's Team of the 20th Century. A native of Skegness, where he was once a deck chair attendant, he was one of the great bargain buys of Anfield history, costing Bill Shankly just ?8,000 from Scunthorpe in June 1967.

He succeeded Tommy Lawrence as regular first choice in 1970 and showed exceptional abilities as last line of defence, blending superb shot-stopping with amazing agility and judgement.

Clemence played 61 times for England, less than half the total of his 125-cap contemporary Peter Shilton even though many pundits rated the Liverpool man superior. In the great 1978-79 title-winning

campaign, when Bob Paisley's side set a points record of 68 under the old two-points-for-a-win system, ever present Clemence conceded a record low of 16 goals.

After winning 12 major medals at Anfield, and keeping an incredible 335 clean sheets in 665 appearances, Clemence moved on to Tottehnam for ?00,000 in 1981, won a second FA Cup medal, was honoured with an MBE and played on almost to his 40th birthday.

Republic of Ireland international winger Mark Kennedy was signed from Millwall for £2 million in 1995.

An impressive display for Millwall against Arsenal in a cup tie caught Roy Evans eye and he swooped to bring the smooth talking Dubliner to Anfield.

Kennedy's career at Anfield was a case of what might have been. His debut came at Anfield as a substitute against Leeds United. With the Reds 1-0 down he crashed a drive from 30-yards onto the underside of the bar and it somehow stayed out. If that had gone in his career could have been different.

Kennedy was restricted to substitute appearances and with Evans not deploying wingers it was difficult for him to make an impact.

Frustrated, he left for Wimbledon in 1998, and after a successful spell with Manchester City Kevin Keegan sold him to Wolves for £3 million in the summer of 2001.

簡介﹕
A superb goalscorer he let his feats do his talking for him. He was always unselfish and at all times a gentleman - qualities which earned him the sobriquet "Sir Roger" from an adoring Kop.

His first official title did not come until the 2000 New Year Honours list when he received an MBE, one of the last five members of England's 1966 World Cup winning team to be decorated. During the tournament he scored three times in six appearances and, overall, hit 18 goals in 34 England games, underlining the deadly finishing instincts of the 5ft 9in striker.

At Liverpool he developed an incisive attacking partnership with Ian St John and his haul of 245 League goals between 1959 and 1969 stands as a club record, as does his single season total of 41 in the 1961-62 Second Division promotion campaign.

But Liverpool found him by sheer chance. Club scout Bill Jones went to watch a Knutsford player in a Mid Cheshire League game but was alerted, instead, by a Stockton heath player called Hunt - and a majestic Anfield career beckoned. After winning two League titles and an FA Cup winners medal Hunt moved on to Bolton and is a long-serving member of the Pools Panel.

簡介﹕
Dutch striker Erik Meijer left Anfield to return to the German Bundesliga and sign for SV Hamburg on a free transfer on Monday 11th December 2000.

Meijer joined Liverpool on a Bosman transfer from German side Bayer Leverkusen before the start of the 1999-2000 season, and the boyhood Liverpool fan fulfilled an ambition when he joined the Reds with his total enthusiasm and commitment to the cause endearing him to the Liverpool supporters.

Although not a prolific scorer, Meijer proved to be strong in the air and a constant menace to opposing defences with his desire to chase lost causes, and defending from the front like Ian Rush used to do so effectively.

In total, Meijer made 27 appearances for Liverpool. He didn't manage a league goal but his only two Liverpool goals came in the 5-1 Worthington Cup victory over Hull City at Boothferry Park in 1999.

He didn't start a game for Liverpool in the 2000-01 season, but made three appearances off the substitutes bench against Arsenal, Aston Villa and Manchester City. A spell on loan at First Division Preston North End followed before the move to Kevin Keegan's old club SV Hamburg.

Centre-forward Alan moved from Sussex amateur side Worthing to Liverpool when he was 20 years old and made a scoring debut on 5th December 1953 in a 5-2 win home victory over Blackpool. He only played another two times that season and just 7 the following season, in which he scored 3 more goals. Undoubtedly the highlight of Alan's Liverpool career was scoring a brave hat-trick at Huddersfield after pulling a muscle early in the game during1956.

Although he was in and out of the side during the next few years, Alan still finished with an impressive 33 goals from 69 League appearances for Liverpool before being transferred to Tranmere Rovers in February 1961.

簡介﹕
A player hailed by his manager Bill Shankly as being "born to score goals", his career at Anfield was cruelly cut down in its prime by injury. Arrowsmith, born in Hollingworth, Cheshire, was a record-breaking marksman in school and junior football. He cost Liverpool ?,500 in 1960 as a 17-year-old from Ashton United, where he had been a team-mate of future England star Alan Ball whose father, Alan senior, was manager.

He made his debut in October of the following year, the season in which Liverpool won promotion back to the top flight. But he literally shot to prominence in 1963-64, scoring four times against Derby County on his FA Cup debut for the club and hitting 15 League goals in 20 outings to help fire Liverpool to the championship and into Europe for the first time.

But on the eve of the following season, prior to Liverpool's trip to Reykjavik for their European debut, Arrowsmith suffered major damage to his left knee in a tussle with West Ham's Eddie Bovington in the Charity Shield duel at Anfield.

Although he returned to action midway through the season Arrowsmith could never recapture his blistering scoring edge and he moved on to Bury for ?5,000 in 1968 and later played for Rochdale and Macclesfield.

簡介﹕
A local boy from a family with a strong football pedigree, he formed the first of Liverpool's great post-Second World War attack partnerships alongside Albert Stubbins. Balmer's uncles Bill and Bob had played for Everton in the early 1900's and Jack had been on the Goodison books as an amateur. But he signed professional for Liverpool as a 19-year old in 1935 and later became captain.

He was equally at home at centre or inside forward and during the war years won England recognition in what were classed as unofficial internationals. But the resumption of organised League football in 1946-47 brought Balmer the only major winners medal of his career as Liverpool lifted the first post-war championship.

Liverpool's then club record ?2,500 signing of Stubbins from Newcastle produced a bountiful 48-goal attacking partnership with Balmer - each man scoring 24 - in a side that also included the legendary Billy Liddell and subsequent Anfield managers Phil Taylor and Bob Paisley.

During November of that season Balmer earned a niche in the record books by hitting three consecutive League hat tricks: three against Portsmouth, four at Derby and three against Arsenal. He also scored five in the next four games to give him 15 goals in seven matches! He retired in 1952 after scoring 111 goals in 313 League and FA Cup appearances.

簡介﹕

Signed from American major league side Columbus Crew, just ahead of Christmas 1997, Brad Friedel arrived at Anfield after a five year wait. The Reds had been chasing his signature for a while, but difficulties in obtaining a work permit for his services had proved to be a major obstacle. However, his international record with the USA was finally sufficient for him to obtain a work permit and Friedel made his Liverpool debut at Aston Villa in February 1998.

The American kept his place for the rest of the season and started the 1998-99 season as number one, but lost his place to David James. When Sander Westerveld arrived at Anfield Friedel had another problem. Although the work permit was renewed for the 1999-2000 season, only three non-EC players were allowed in the squad, with those places usually going to Patrik Berger, Vladimir Smicer and Stephane Henchoz.

Friedel only played four matches last season when Westerveld was suspended, and with the arrival of Pegguy Arphexad has another battle on his hands. A work permit situation means that the 'keeper is currently in the United States.

簡介﹕
A goalkeeper with a degree in English Literature, Kenny Dalglish signed Mike Hooper from Wrexham for £50,000 in 1985 and he proved a reliable deputy for Bruce Grobbelaar.

Hooper made his Reds debut at Wembley of all places as a second half substitute for the injured Bruce Grobbelaar in the 1-1 draw with Everton in the Charity Shield. Hooper then started the 1986-87 season at Newcastle, becoming only the fourth keeper to start a campaign for Liverpool in 24 years and played the first eight games until Grobbelaar returned.

A memorable moment in Hooper's Reds career came at Stoke City's Victoria Ground in 1987 when deputising for the injured Grobbelaar in an FA Cup 3rd Round tie, and became the hero when he made a series of fine stops to prevent an upset including a brilliant injury time save.

The following season 1988-89 saw Hooper get an extended run in the team. With Grobbelaar ruled out through illness, 'Hooper man' as the KOP dubbed him deputised well as the last line of the Reds defence. However at the turn of 1989, Hooper lost his place to the fit again Grobbelaar.

Under new manager Graeme Souness Hooper bounced back and was preferred to Grobbelaar for the game at Old Trafford against Manchester United in October 1991 and produced a brilliant display as the game ended goalless. However injury set in and Grobbelaar was soon back as Number One.

The 1992-93 season saw the capture of David James to Anfield and it appeared Hooper's days might be over at Liverpool. However, due to James suffering a dip in confidence and Grobbelaar jetting back and forwards to Zimbabwe for World Cup duty Hooper got his chance.

However, despite some notable good display's, playing behind an ever changing back four didn't help communication and after playing in the 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Bolton at Anfield, Hooper was back on the sidelines once again and that proved to be his last game for the club.

Hooper left Anfield to join Kevin Keegan at Newcastle United in 1993. Things started well for him at St James' Park when he was first choice and almost scored in a game against Everton at Goodison Park when he hit the bar from a goal kick! However, things turned sour at Newcastle when he made a series of errors that had the Geordie boo boys on his back. So bad was the hate mail he received he decided to retire from football.
