簡介﹕
The charismatic Welshman became a 'cult figure' on the Kop after his transfer from Wrexham, even though he only actually played for Liverpool徭uring three different seasons. Joey was an enthustiastic and tough-tackling left-back whose uncompromising style quickly endeared him to the Liverpool crowd.

He was 20 years old when Bob Paisley signed him in the summer of 1975 and still a bit 'raw', which愩erhaps explained why - even though he started the season in the first-team - he only appeared in 13 First Division matches, one short agonisingly of the number required to qualify for a championship medal. The left-back role was also covered by Phil Neal & Alec Lindsay (briefly) in 1975-76 but a year later Joey had established himself in the first-team and only missed 3 of the 42 League fixtures. 1976-77 was his and Liverpool's greatest year of the decade; only Manchester United's victory in the F.A. cup final prevented it from being the greatest-EVER season in the club's history.

But Joey was a member of the side that finally brought the European cup back to Anfield after their memorable triumph in Rome. Midway through the next season, Joey lost his place to the ageing but still dependable Tommy Smith and then subsequently to a young Alan Hansen. It was clear that his time at Anfield was drawing to廇 close. He eventually rejoined Wrexham and later had spells at Chelsea and Huddersfield, where he was just as popular with the supporters as he had been on Merseyside.

Joey finally returned to his first club for a second time before the 1987-88 season and when his playing career finally ended, he continued to work at The Racecourse Ground as a coach with the same enthusiasm that he had always displayed as a player. Joey was 'capped' over 70 times by his country and even though he figured in less than a hundred first-team games for Liverpool, he is still fondly remembered by the fans as one of the most colourful characters ever to pull on the famous red shirt.

簡介﹕
Alan had been a 19 year old full-back for Newcastle United on the day that Liverpool destroyed his F.A. cup final hopes in 1974 by outplaying the Geordies 3-0 at Wembley. He didn't know it at the time but although he never would collect a winners' medal in the F.A. cup, he would win more trophies than he could ever have dreamed possible after his transfer from the North-East to Merseyside just before the start of the 1978-79 season.

The left-back had been a bit of a 'problem-area' for Liverpool in 1977-78 with Joey Jones, Tommy Smith & Alan Hansen all wearing the No. 3 shirt at some stage of that season. But Alan stepped confidently into their shoes and played 37 League games in each of his first two seasons at Anfield, winning League championship medals on both occasions. Alan missed much of the 1980-81 season through injury but still contributed two priceless goals from full-back to keep the club's run of success going on into the 80's. His extra-time goal narrowly failed to beat West Ham in the League cup final at Wembley but he was a member of the team that beat the Hammers in the Aston Villa replay 18 days later.

Then on an unforgettable night in Paris eight weeks after that his blistering cross-shot fizzed past the Real Madrid 'keeper in a blur to bring the European cup to Anfield for the 3rd time in 5 seasons. His astonishing record of scoring in big games continued as he struck a second-half equaliser against Manchester United in the 1983 League cup final and then a year later came the most dramatic moment of all, the decisive penalty-kick in the shoot-out that followed the 1-1 draw with the Italian champions from Rome, who had been given the extremely unfair advantage of playing the European cup final at their own stadium.

Kennedy still played in most of the following season's First Division fixtures but by the end of the season his place had been taken by Jim Beglin. He did play in the opening 8 League matches of the 1985-86 season but a comical own-goal in the last of those games (at Oxford) may have been the final straw for the new player-manager, Kenny Dalglish. Alan never played for the club again and Phil Neal, his full-back partner for so long and with whom he had enjoyed so much success, would only last a few more games before he too was replaced (by Steve Nicol).

Alan had a brief spell in Belgium and also with Hartlepool and Wrexham in the lower divisions of the Football League before continuing to play non-League football until he had passed his 40th birthday. He was a popular player who made nearly 250 First Division appearances for Liverpool to add to the 150+ he had played at Newcastle and he also reached the remarkable total of exactly 100 cup games for Liverpool, a testimony to the club's domination of the time and the long cup runs which so often ended with success in the final.

簡介﹕
Norwegian centre half Bjorn Tore Kvarme arrived at the club as a replacement for the popular John Scales in January 1997.

After selling Scales to Spurs for a fee of around £2.5 million, Roy Evans looked to have completed a shrewd piece of business by bringing in Kvarme on a Bosman transfer. Kvarme had impressed the Reds coaching staff while training with the club during a visit to Merseyside to see his close friend, Stig Inge Bjornebye.

The early signs were encouraging. He made his debut at Anfield on the right side of a three man central defensive formation, and did exceptionally well in a 3-0 win over Aston Villa. He gave an outstanding display at Highbury during a 2-1 win over Arsenal that had Liverpool fans thinking 'what a good signing this Kvarme was.' Sadly, however, it all started to go wrong for the Norwegian when he was caught in possession during a Merseyside derby at Goodison. Being robbed of the ball by Danny Cadamarteri, the Everton striker went on to turn Neil Ruddock inside out before scoring.

To make things worse, a couple of weeks later he made a carbon copy error at Anfield which allowed Andy Cole, to also score and set United up for a 3-1 victory. He never recovered from those two grave errors.

Committing two such vital mistakes against the reds' two main rivals destroyed Kvarme's confidence, and he was never the same player after that. When Roy Evans scrapped the wing back system to play 4-4-2, there was some hope for the Norwegian that he may be able to make the right back spot his own, but he couldn't displace Jason McAteer and Norwegian compatriot Vegard Heggem, and Gerard Houllier sold him to St Etienne in 1999.

簡介﹕
Mark was one of manager Bob Paisley's most astute signings, a classy defender with over 200 Football League games under his belt for his home-town club Preston North End and then later Brighton & Hove Albion, from whom Liverpool bought him for ?00,000 just before the start of the 1981-82 season. He went straight into the team and made his debut at Wolverhampton on 29th August 1981 and figured in 39 of the 42 games that would lead to him winning the first of the five championship medals he would gain during his time at Anfield.

It was an unlikely championship too with many changes in personnel to the squad which had become champions of Europe the previous Spring. Lying mid-table after a depressing home defeat by Manchester City on Boxing Day, the team won 13 and drew 3 of its last 16 games and Mark's towering header past former Anfield favourite Ray Clemence in the penultimate fixture of the season equalised Glenn Hoddle's first-half strike before he hooked the ball over his head just 4 minutes later to lay on a goal for Kenny Dalglish. Ronnie Whelan's late volley ensured that Liverpool could not be caught in the race for the championship. It was the first of three successive League titles for the club and Mark only missed 5 of the 126 fixtures that brought about that remarkable achievment.

He also won 3 successive medals in the League cup and showed his usual composure in the intimidating atmosphere of the Olympic stadium in Rome when the Italian champions were held to a 1-1 draw in the European cup final before Alan Kennedy won the resulting penalty shoot-out. Mark was also a key member of the 'Double' squad in 1986, although perhaps fortunate to play in the F.A. cup final against Everton. He had been injured against Oxford towards the end of March and missed 4 crucial games of the championship run-in, although Kenny Dalglish did recall him for the last 4 League matches but only two of them were from the start. However, Gary Gillespie's late withdrawal from the Wembley squad due to injury made the player-manager's selection headache a lot easier and Lawrenson did finally add an F.A. cup winners' medal to all his other honours.

Capped numerous times by his 'adopted' country (the Republic or Ireland), Mark started the 1987-88 season at the age of 30 with seemingly several years of good football still ahead of him. But forced to leave the field through injury against Arsenal in the middle of January 1988, he was never able recover the fitness he needed to continue playing at the top level and reluctantly but wisely announced that his playing career was over. After a brief and unhappy spell as manager of Oxford United, Mark was away from the football scene for a while but later used his considerable knowledge and experience to become a respected journalist and member of the BBC's "Match of the Day" team.

簡介﹕
Spotted by then reserve team manager Phil Thompson playing for Kirkby Town, Mike Marsh was a Liverpool player waiting to be noticed.

A lifelong Liverpudlian Marsh had all the attributes needed to be a top class Reds star. He was an outstanding passer of the ball and possessed skill in abundance.

After impressing in the reserves he was given his debut by Kenny Dalglish and came on as a second half substitute in the 2-0 Anfield victory over Charlton Athletic in March 1989. His full debut finally arrived in the last game of the 1990-91 season when he was given the number seven jersey by Graeme Souness in the 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Season 1991-92 was the one when Marsh made his breakthrough with 18 league starts in a midfield role and was handed a place on the bench for the 1992 FA Cup Final win over Sunderland, but didn't get on.

He did score a memorable goal in the dramatic UEFA Cup comeback victory over Auxerre at Anfield when Liverpool overturned a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2. However, Marsh was also used by Souness in a right back role that didn't suit his talents and he wasn't comfortable in that position.

Despite his obvious quality, Marsh couldn't hold down a regular place in his favoured central midfield role and was sold by Souness along with David Burrows to West Ham United in 1993 in a swap deal for Julian Dicks.

Despite starting well at Upton Park, Marsh couldn't settle in London and then after spells at Coventry City and under Souness again with Galatasary, he linked up with Reds legend Ronnie Whelan at Southend United.

After a good spell at Roots Hall Marsh was forced to retire from the professional game due to a knee injury, but he did make comebacks at non-league level under former Reds Jan Molby at Kidderminster Harriers then under Mark Wright at Southport.

簡介﹕
Dominic Matteo was born in Scotland with English parents and Italian grandparents. He was first spotted by Liverpool scouts when playing for Birkdale United and he took the eye of Kenny Dalglish while he was watching his son Paul in action. Matteo joined Liverpool's School of Excellence with another eleven year old - Robbie Fowler.

He made his Liverpool debut at Manchester City in October 1993 where he played on the left of midfield. Over the next couple of seasons he played in a variety of roles including left back, centre back and also in the midfield. He didn't have a set position in the side as the Liverpool staff went about working out which position would suit him best.

He started the 1995-96 season as a sweeper and excelled to the extent that he was handed his first international call up for England. Unfortunately his subsequent England call-ups coincided with injury problems and in the following seasons he was unable to make the impact on the international stage that many felt his talent deserving of.

Gerard Houllier saw him as a left back in his Liverpool restructuring plans, issuing a firm 'hands off' warning to any club thinking of launching a bid for his talented defender. The 1999/2000 season promises to be vital for Matteo in terms of establishing himself as a regular in the side, and a good end to the 1998/99 season along with an encouraging start to the following campaign suggested that, after a number of years on the fringes of the Liverpool team, he had finally made the big breakthrough and was in the side to stay. However, with Houllier opting for the experience of Staunton at left back, Dominic was once more faced with a fight to re-establish himself.

簡介﹕
Liverpool mad Jason McAteer had his dreams come true in September 1995 when he joined his boyhood heroes from Bolton Wanderers in a £4.5 million deal.

Roy Evans had been impressed with McAteer's performances during his Bolton days, especially during the 1995 Coca Coca Cup Final at Wembley when his energetic midfield display caught the eye.

However, when he arrived at Anfield Evans played him as a right sided wing back switching Rob Jones to left back, due to the midfield pairing of Jamie Redknapp and John Barnes.

The role worked well in the early days with McAteer forging a good partnership down the right with Steve McManaman. He was energetic and could get up and down the line well supporting the attack.

He suffered from inconsistency with his crosses, with the 1996 FA Cup Final against Manchester United being a prime example, in what was a major disappointing day for Liverpool, white suits and all.

McAteer continued to be an integral part of Roy Evans team but the writing was on the wall for him once Gerard Houllier came to Anfield. His final game for Liverpool was a substitute appearance, ironically in his favoured central midfield role as a replacement for Paul Ince, in the ill fated 2-1 FA Cup fourth round defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford.

McAteer helped Blackburn back into the Premiership in 2001 before joining Sunderland in October 2001.

簡介﹕
One of the most versatile players in Liverpool history, Scotland international Nicol could fill any role in defence or midfield with equal skill and dexterity. His value as a utility man was incalculable and the £300,000 Bob Paisley paid Ayr United to bring him to Anfield in October 1981 proved one of the bargain deals of all time.

He made his senior debut in August 1982 but had to wait until 1983-84 under new boss Joe Fagan for a sustained run in the side. He ended that campaign with a League title and European Cup winners medal, the latter gained despite his spot kick failure in the penalty shoot-out with Roma.

At size 11, Nicol's feet were among the biggest in football and his boots were a full size bigger than any other in the Liverpool squad of that era. But the talent within them was underlined by his election as Footballer of the Year in 1989 by the nation's soccer writers.

Nicol played for five Liverpool managers - Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Roy Evans were the others - and made 466 appearances, scoring 46 goals. Overall he won four League titles and three FA Cup winners medals before becoming a player coach at Notts County in 1995. He later played for Sheffield Wednesday and Doncaster before becoming caretaker coach of American club New England Revolution, and then head coach of Boston Bulldogs.

簡介﹕
Assistant manager Phil Thompson won everything in the game as a player and now he is hoping to help the modern day Liverpool team repeat his triumphs of years ago.

Appointed as number two to Gerard Houllier when the Frenchman was named as sole manager Thompson arrived back at the club from which he left some years earlier after a spell as reserve manager.

Having won seven league titles, 2 European Cups, two League Cups, a UEFA Cup and an FA Cup during his playing career Thompson understands the Liverpool history and so is seen by many fans as the man to help bring the glory days back to Anfield. His coaching career began with the Liverpool reserve team in the early nineties, but when that came to an end there then followed a period of time when his only involvement in the game was through his highly successful media work. He jumped at the chance to once again work at the club he loves so much, although he scoffed at suggestions on his appointment that he would be 'too nice' for the job.

He said: 'People may look at me and say 'hey, nice guy', but they don't know the other side of me. I will do whatever is necessary to help this club be successful again. I know we have the players to do it and I know we can do it, but we have to pull together and all work for the same thing. I have good credentials in the coaching side of the game and I hope I can put them to good use again with Liverpool.'

簡介﹕
Graeme Souness signed hard man Neil 'Razor' Ruddock from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 1993 for £2.5 million to add steel to the defence.

Souness saw him as the ideal partner for Mark Wright but it didn't quite work out like that. He already had a reputation as a hard man and his Anfield debut in a Red shirt was controversial to say the least. In Ronnie Whelan's testimonial a clash with former Red hero Peter Beardsley now playing for Newcastle, left the striker with a fractured cheekbone.

Ruddock made his Liverpool debut against Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield and set up one of the goals in a 2-0 win for Nigel Clough, then followed that up in his third game by scoring his first goal against Swindon Town.

His best moment from the 1993-94 season was scoring an equaliser in the 3-3 draw with Manchester United at Anfield, with a thumping header past Peter Schmeichel. In fact he did not know he had scored. After the game it transpired Ruddock was suffering from concussion and only realised afterwards what that goal had meant!

When Roy Evans took charge at Anfield, he used a different defensive formula with Ruddock playing as one of three centre halves and he looked more comfortable in this role.

He played his part in the club winning the Coca Cola Cup, when he played in the 2-1 win against Bolton Wanderers at Wembley.

However the following season he experienced what he called 'his worst moment in football,' when Roy Evans left him out of the FA Cup Final squad to face Manchester United at Wembley. His replacement was Phil Babb and Liverpool lost 1-0. They badly missed Razor's steel and fighting spirit and Evans later admitted he had made a mistake.

Fighting fit and raring to go at the start of the 1996-97 season disaster struck for Ruddock when he injured his groin just before the big kick-off against Middlesbrough and the remainder of his career at Anfield was to be blighted by niggling injuries.

Ruddock's final game for Liverpool was a disappointing affair as Liverpool lost 3-0 to Strasbourg in the UEFA Cup.

He then moved to West Ham United before a spell with Crystal Palace. Ruddock is now player-coach assisting Roy Evans at Swindon Town.

簡介﹕
Steve Staunton bid a fond farewell to Liverpool when he rejoined Premiership side Aston Villa on December 8th, 2000 on a free transfer.

The Republic of Ireland international who originally left Anfield for Villa Park back in 1991 rejoined the Reds for a second spell in 1998. In total Staunton made 147 appearances for Liverpool, scoring six goals.

Staunton was first signed for the Reds in 1986 by Kenny Dalglish from Irish side Dundalk, and made his first appearance in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham at Anfield in 1988. He made his international debut the following month and became first choice left back for the remainder of the season, playing in the 3-2 1989 FA Cup victory over Everton at Wembley. Staunton was also in the title winning side of 1990 before being sold in the summer of 1991 by Graeme Souness to Aston Villa for more than £1 million. He picked up a League Cup winners medal with Villa before rejoining Liverpool on a free transfer under the Bosman Ruling.

Staunton had previously made one appearance for the first team in the 2000-2001 season as a substitute in the 3-3 draw against Southampton at the Dell, and had been told by Liverpool he could leave on a free transfer.

He then went to Selhurst Park to join First Division Crystal Palace on a month’s loan before he was recalled by Liverpool to join the squad for their UEFA Cup tie in Olympiakos on November 23rd, 2000 – his last appearance for Liverpool.

He made an impressive appearance as a second half substitute for Djimi Traore in Athens, and almost marked his comeback with a goal when he hit the bar with a curled free-kick. He was then scheduled to make a comeback for the first team against Newcastle at St James’ Park but suffered a hamstring injury in training, before he completed the move back to Aston Villa.

簡介﹕
It was literally a red-letter day for Venison when he joined Liverpool from Sunderland in July 1986 for £250,000. The full back wrote to every club in the old First Division informing them that his Roker contract had ended and asking if they were interested in signing him.

When Kenny Dalglish replied inviting him to Liverpool, he jumped at the chance. Former England Youth and Under 21 skipper Venison had already earned himself a place in the record books by becoming the youngest ever Wembley Cup Final captain. He led Sunderland against Norwich City in the 1985 Milk Cup Final at the tender age of 20 years 220 days.

Wembley was also the venue for his competitive debut, a 1-1 Charity Shield draw with Everton on his 22nd Birthday. His Anfield career was hampered by injury but in 158 appearances he won two League championships and an F A Cup winners medal.

Venison returned to his native North East to rejoin Newcastle for £250,000 in 1992 and two years later, at the age of 30 and playing in midfield, he won the first of two England caps. He later joined Galatasaray and Southampton before becoming a television football pundit.

簡介﹕
Stylish England international Mark Wright was signed by Graeme Souness from Derby County for ?.2 million in the summer of 1991, and was soon joined at Anfield by Rams team-mate Dean Saunders.

With Alan Hansen retired, Glenn Hysen soon to go and Gary Gillespie moving on to Celtic, Liverpool were desperate for a centre half of quality, and after his courageous display's for England in the 1990 World Cup Wright fitted the bill perfectly.

Having made his Reds debut in the 2-1 win over Oldham Athletic at Anfield in August 1991, disaster came in his second game when he limped off after an hour in the 2-1 defeat by Manchester City at Maine Road. This was to be the start of many niggling injuries in his first season at Anfield but he did bounce back in style.

With Ronnie Whelan injured, Souness made Wright captain and his proudest moment came when he lifted the FA Cup at Wembley in 1992 after Liverpool defeated Sunderland 2-0.

However, that high was followed by a series of despairing lows with loss of form and injury problems set in. Wright lost the captaincy the following season and lost his place to the Dane Torben Piechnik.

More problems arose when Souness left Anfield and Roy Evans took sole charge. In the summer of 1994 Wright, along with Julian Dicks were relegated to the reserves after a 4-1 pre-season defeat at Bolton with Evans criticising the pair for attitude problems.

When Evans then signed John Scales and Phil Babb the writing looked to be on the wall for Wright but you can't keep a good man down and, in true three lions bravery, the England star bounced back to the team.

An Achilles problem and a knot of scar tissue higher up his leg was restricting Wright's progress and in a move of desperation he turned to blind physiotherapist Norman Collins for treatment. Collins was well known in the business for quick recovery and sure enough sorted out Wright's problem and the player was back in training.

Free of injury Wright worked harder than ever and was rewarded with a first team recall as a replacement for the injured Scales in March 1995 against Manchester United at Anfield. His performance that day signalled that Wright was back in business and a man of the match display saw Liverpool beat their fierce rivals 2-0.

Although he wasn't included in the 13 for the Coca Cola Cup win at Wembley in 1995, Wright was back the following season and with Scales moving to Tottenham he was back in his favoured position in a back three, playing 41 matches in the campaign.

A good leader and talker at the back, Wright was comfortable at bringing the ball out of defence and setting up attacks. He also chipped in with some memorable goals including a blistering drive against Queens Park Rangers in February 1996, and a header that gave the Reds brief hope against Paris St Germain in the European Cup Winners' Cup semi-final defeat.

Wright left Anfield in 1998 after retiring due to injury and pursued a career in management. His first post arrived fairly locally as manager of Conference side Southport for the 2000-2001 season and he did a fine job, steering the Haig Avenue outfit to a finishing position in the top five.

However, following a disagreement with the Southport chairman of whether the club should go professional or not Wright left, but was quickly back in football being appointed manager of his old club Oxford United.
