TheLakers are an average defensive team, allowing more than 100 points pergame. They're an inconsistent team defensively, as they showed Sundaynight when they allowed a season-high 72 points to the Warriors in thefirst half, then just 43 in the second, but back-to-back threes byStephen Jackson that cost them the game.

Coach Jackson wants to see improvement.

"We'vebeen trying to emphasize defense more in our practices," he said."We've gotten (new) guys that have acclimated to our offense. ... Butwe're still a ways from really putting in the kind of effort and theconsistency that we have to have on some of our screen-roll defense.

The Lakers play good defense at times, but they have soft spots, particularly in the middle.
"Our athleticism bails us out a lot defensively," Jackson said. "But we're still a team that's learning a lot of things about our defense."

Late in Sunday's tense fourth quarter, Jordan Farmar and Ronny Turiaf exchanged words, which Jackson didn't appreciate.
"There was some disturbances tonight where players didn't play team basketball," Jacksonsaid. "And the other players picked up on it at times. And there weresome words exchanged. That happens in games that are highly emotionallike this."

"Thefirst unit played well and did a good job getting us back into thegame, so it shortened the time (for the reserves), and they wereanxious about their time and their opportunity on the floor."

TheLakers have had their share of injuries. So when they saw the Maverickslose MVP Dirk Nowitzki to a lower left leg and ankle injury duringSunday's game against the Spurs, the Lakers felt their pain.
The Mavericks are seventh in the West and could be in danger of missing the playoffs if Nowitzki misses two weeks, as Dallas expects he will.

Still, Jackson doesn't think Nowitzki's injury dooms the Mavericks. Jackson said players like backup Brandon Bass and starter Josh Howard will have step their games up.
"It's going to be a trial and test for them probably for a little bit," Jacksonsaid. "But I think they are strong enough to recover. Devean (George)can come in and play some small forward spot. Defensively he's a solidperformer. They can move Josh to small. They are can do some things ona smaller team out there. "

Turiaf Toughs It Out

Theinjuries to Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum and Chris Mihm have left Turiaf toplay center, and though undersized, Turiaf has played well, Jackson said.
"We've been fortunate we haven't had to play a lot of back-to-backs, and Ronny has been able to get through most of this," Jackson said. "We look at him as a guy that when he gets over 30 minutes, his activity decreases."
Turiaf had 16 points, six rebounds and three blocks in 23 minutes against Golden
State.
